I can not tell you how many times in the past 3 weeks I’ve had to say “Change your attitude” to one of my children. It seems when we work out one problem, another one creeps on in to take it’s place. Whether it be selfishness, pride, or just being downright ugly, our attitudes in our heart at some point shine forth.
“As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.” Proverbs 27.19
Then this morning, I was having to deal with my own attitude. Discontentment sure knows how to creep up on me. The older I get, and the more I get to know myself, the more I realize how much I actually like change. Obviously, change is not a bad thing, and sometimes change can really be a great thing. But I struggle knowing when I’m getting the itch for something new, or if I have a real ‘holy discontentment’. Then my own voice echoed inside, “Gail, change your attitude.”
An attitude of discontentment will just as sure destroy you, as one of pride and selfishness.
As a wife and mother, I really have to keep my attitude in check. I’ve also been noticing other things in my attitude that I see played out through my children. Do you sigh when doing dishes or laundry? Do you struggle and get frustrated when it comes to housekeeping? If you’re like me, you just might answer ‘No way!’ to these questions. But check yourself. I catch myself sighing over dishes. I don’t even realize I’m doing it! So, when I see my children have bad attitudes towards their ‘service’ (fancy name for chores!) I need to go back and see if it is their attitude that needs to be adjusted, or mine.
I’ve found myself in need of an attitude adjustment. And, I’m tellin’ ya, it ain’t easy! “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;to be made new in the attitude of your minds;and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4.22-24 (emphasis mine) I need a continual putting off of the old self, being renewed in my mind, and putting on the new self to be more like Christ.
I hope this will bless you today. To keep your striving after the attitude of Christ. I am a Child of God, and sometimes, I need an attitude adjustment, the same way my own children do!
I would love to be friends!
