Biblical Love: Beareth All Things
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
1st Corinthians 13.7 (KJV)
In the NIV it says, “protects,” and in the NASB it also says “bears” with a note ‘covers.’ Biblical Love upholds and withstands all trials. It makes me think of the verse “Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins.” Proverbs 10.12 and also 1st Peter 4.8 “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
I’m not sure about you, but my love tends to be protective, defensive even, especially when it comes to my husband and children. It’s no wonder they use the word ‘bear’ because I take on the role of Mama Bear if you think you’re going to mess with those that I love.
Our love needs to be one that protects. Not one that is out to make trouble. It needs to be one that will be expressed by ‘covering a multitude of sins.’
I recently heard a cute little quote, although I am unsure of who said it. It goes like this:
I am a sinner. Married to a sinner. Raising little sinners.
I laughed. Because it is true. Yes, I am saved, and unfortunately, I still choose to sin. Children, obviously, sin. Yet, my love for them needs to be pure so that it will cover their sins. Not only that, but it will protect them from what may harm them. If your children are anything like mine, you get the “Why, Mom?” a lot! Sometimes, there is no reason to tell my children “No” about something, except for the fact that I don’t want them to get hurt. Physically, emotionally, spiritually. I want to protect them.
Our love needs to be on that is willing to bear the burdens of others. Galatians 6.2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” We need to be willing to hold the weight of those we love, of our brothers and sisters in Christ. I know when others are willing to help me bear my burdens, the load all of the sudden seems much lighter. It doesn’t feel hopeless. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That is what our love needs to look like. Now, my word of caution is this: If you are going to bear the burdens of those who are unsaved, be careful not to fall into sin.
I think it can be a testimony to an unbeliever when we walk beside them in the troublesome times of life. Don’t let them drag you down. I feel like that sounds awful. Yet, for our testimony to be upheld and true, we need to stay on the straight and narrow. Still, I think a great way to show the love of Christ is bearing the burdens of others.
I encourage you today, to bear with one another. Protect one another. Let the love of Christ shine through you by allowing a multitude of sins to be covered (not excused, by the way. There is a difference.) Let the Mama Bear come out in you, in a good way.
Blessings on this Friday to you!
