Homeschooling: School of Life
I just started reading the book entitled “When You Rise Up” by RC Sproul Jr. I’m still in chapter 1, so I can’t make a great review on it, but so far it has been very good. It has made me once again think about why we are choosing to homeschool. Our biggest reason for homeschooling is to instill in our children Godly character. I know we have a long way to go on that one. However, that is our desire.
Above a ‘great education’ I want our children to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. And yes, I believe the best people to teach them that is us, their parents. Because we have 5 children, I throw the ‘They won’t be social’ argument out the window. I believe, if we can teach our children the greatest commandment, and that they live it out, that they will receive a great a great education. Why? Because when we love the Lord with all that we have, we strive for excellence. Not for our own glory, but for His.

I want part of our homeschooling to be teaching our children about real life. How to ‘do’ life. Be in the workplace. Deal with conflict. Help those who are needy. I want our school to be more than ‘school’. I want it to be life. I desire for them to learn when ever and where ever. I want to teach them that when it comes to school we can think outside the box (which is hard for me!) that when we are playing at a play ground, or swimming in a pool, we can be learning.
Of course, we all want the best of both worlds. A great education and Godly character. I’m not saying we can’t have that. I’m just wondering, what do you desire most? Where are you putting most of your time and effort? Raising warriors for Christ, or raising little Einsteins?
Blessings,

I have read that book, “When You Rise Up” & it is excellent!
I just finished chapter one this afternoon! Loving it so far!
I don’t think it’s possible to call an education “great” if it doesn’t include Godly character training. It’s why public schools are so deadly to the American civic soul. In fact, I’d say we’ll see the measures of “real” education, i.e. scores in the sciences and math, continue to decline until we stop making ourselves stupid with morally “neutral” education.
Preach it sister!
I agree!
rock on! His Word is such a better educator than all our textbooks.
was gonna add some witty comment, but it wasn’t so i erased it….
